Dog Bandannas DIY

My little dachshund, Genevieve, will be turning two in a couple days. I missed her first birthday travelling which was such a shame so my family and I are going to try and make this one extra special. Genevieve still chews through all her soft toys at the moment so I decided to make her some more dog bandannas as a present. These bandannas are super easy to make and look very cute.

What you will need:

  • Fabric in assorted prints

  • Sewing machine

  • Scissors

  • Cotton thread (and a bobbin)

  • Pins

  • Iron

  • Paper pattern (I used this one)

  • Tape measure

For the fabric, cotton poplin works really well. It is quite flexible and doesn't tend to crease a lot so is comfy for your dog and easy for you. the fabric I used is from Spotlight and a lot of it was from the off-cuts section. The prints were absolutely adorable and weren't too pricey.

The first thing you will need to do is measure around your dog's neck to see what size they are. Cut out the pattern that fits best and lay it on the fold of the fabric. Pin it in place allowing for the seams and cut it out. To prevent the edges from fraying you can cut the fabric with pinking shears or lock the edges on the sewing machine using a zig-zag stitch.

The next step is to sew the seams. Pin the seam width over and iron to create a sharp edge. To sew the seams, use a straight stitch of about 2mm and sew all the way around the bandanna,

The final step is to sew the top of the bandanna so that a collar can be fed through it. Fold the top of the bandanna so that the top edge meets the corner before the triangular section begins. Pin it in place and iron. Simply sew the fold together along its bottom edges using a 2mm straight stitch and the bandanna is complete!
